Recycled Content standards

Global Recycled Standard: Full Product Standard

The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is an international, voluntary, full product standard that sets requirements for third-party certification of recycled content, chain of custody, social and environmental practices and chemical restrictions.

The GRS is intended to meet the needs of companies looking to verify the recycled content of their products (both finished and intermediate) and to verify responsible social, environmental and chemical practices in their production. The objectives of the GRS are to define requirements to ensure accurate content claims and good working conditions, and that harmful environmental and chemical impacts are minimised. This includes companies in ginning, spinning, weaving and knitting, dyeing and printing and stitching in more than 50 countries.

Recycled Blended Content Standard: 5% Minimum Recycled Content

“When the product contains 5-95% Recycled Content, the RCS Blended logo shall be used. There are no other restrictions on the remaining content.

Each stage of production is required to be certified, beginning at the recycling stage and ending at the last seller in the final business-to-business transaction. Material Collection and Material Concentration sites are subject to self-declaration, document collection, and on-site visits. The RCS does not address social or environmental aspects of processing and manufacturing, quality, or legal compliance. The RCS uses the ISO 14021 definition of Recycled Content.” (Textile Exchange, 2019)

Recycled 100 Content Standard: 95-100% Recycled content

When the product contains 95-100% Recycled Content, the RCS 100 logo shall only be used. Any non-certified material shall not be of the same type as the certified material. Each stage of production is required to be certified, beginning at the recycling stage and ending at the last seller in the final business-to-business transaction. Material Collection and Material Concentration sites are subject to self-declaration, document collection, and on-site visits.”

Global Recycled Standard: Minimum of 50% recycled material

The product contains at least 50% GRS certified material (this may include pre-consumer content, post-consumer content, or a combination).

Percentage of GRS certified material, if lower than 95%.
